Voting During the Pandemic

Connecticut's primary election will be held Tuesday, August 11th, 2020. The primary election is for affiliated voters to choose who will be their party's candidates in the upcoming general election on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic there have been several statewide modifications in this year's primary elections.

The Presidential primary election has been rescheduled twice, finally decided to be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, the same day as all other office primaries are held to reduce polling exposure to contagions. Additionally, voting rules have been amended to allow all registered voters to vote via absentee ballot adding COVID-19 to one of the constitutional conditions to obtain an absentee ballot. Applications for absentee ballots were mailed to all registered voters in early July. The actual ballots have been mailed. If you applied for an absentee ballot, but have not yet received a ballot, please contact your Town Clerk's office ASAP! The Killingly Town Clerk's office contact number is: 860-779-5308.

Concerned because my ballot had not yet been received by August 1, 2020, I called the Killingly Town Clerk's office. The Assistant Town Clerk was able to verify receipt of the absentee ballot applications for each member of my household. She explained that the ballots are sent from the Secretary of the State's office, and due to higher than normal demand, the process was somewhat delayed. The Assistant explained that the ballot would probably arrive via the mail within the week but I should call back if it did not arrive. The ballots came in the mail the following day.

Absentee voters should carefully follow the included instructions. The ballot must be dated and signed. Your signature is verified against your voter registration filed at the Town Hall for validity. Fill in the bubble for your preferred candidate(s) completely. Ballots must be sealed and returned in the included envelope. Completed ballots can be mailed, brought to the Town Clerk's office in person during regular business hours, and in Killingly, there is a clearly marked white drop box for ballots only, outside the Town Hall, beside the building near the back municipal parking lot. To alleviate the U.S. Postal Service pressure, we used the drop box since we were driving through the downtown area anyway. I highly recommend using the expanded absentee voting options this year to not only keep yourself and your family safe, but also other community members and poll workers safe by minimizing risks of COVID-19 to all.

For those wishing to vote in person on Tuesday, August 11th, 2020, both normal polling places will be open:

Districts 1, 3, and 5 will vote at the Old Killingly High School on Westfield Ave.

Districts 2 and 4 will vote at the New Killingly High School on Route 12 in Dayville.

Polls are open from 6am to 8pm. If you are unsure of your voting district you can call the Town Clerk's office or click here for your polling location.
