4G's Restaurant & Pizza

**** 4 out of 5

Very good COVID-19 accommodations are available. We were able to order by phone, pay by phone, drive up and have dinner delivered to our car. There are tables set up for outside dining with “bar hop” service! Their Chef Salad is a personal favorite. Although subjective, I think they have the best pizza in town. The staff is friendly and the food is a good value.

BCG

With medical science working over time to develop effective treatment, prevention, and vaccines for the COVID-19 virus, it's no surprise to learn that some are looking back through what has been used to combat past contagions. While tuberculosis is a bacterial infection vs. a viral infection, clinicians are seeking to study the efficacy of the tuberculosis vaccine, BCG. The vaccine is not required in the U.S. but some of the countries where the vaccine is required are experiencing fewer coronavirus deaths than their neighbors where it's not required. It is not clear the vaccine is what accounts for those difference, but there are clinical trials underway in several countries to explore the possibility that the vaccine may be helpful.

COVID-19 Information

Although many folks are feeling like the worst is over, the numbers are not confirming that we are out of the COVID-19 woods quite yet. In CT, we have flattened the curve and are reopening based on the data. Not all states are basing their reopening strategies on science, and it is beginning to reflect in increased cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. As states reopen, we provide more fuel for the virus to thrive. Each of us must understand the risks, and the data to make solid decisions for ourselves and our families as the country reopens. Transmission among family members in the same household is high. When a family member is exposed to the virus in the community then brings it home, it leads to infection due to the sustained contact with the infected family member. The sustained contact is important. Currently experts estimate that it takes exposure to approximately 1000 COVID-19 viral particles for infections to take hold. We know a single cough can release 3000 droplets that travel at 50 miles per hour, a single sneeze can release 30,000 droplets at 200 miles per hour. An infected droplet may contain as many as 200,000,000 (two hundred million) virus particles which can all be dispersed into the environment around them. You can see how we have a recipe for a pandemic. Exposure time factors into the risk, as well. Basically, exposing yourself to viral particles for extended periods of time increases your risk. Public bathrooms, a cough, a sneeze, breathing in the same space as an infected person for an hour or more, speaking face to face with an infected person for 5 to 10 minutes should be considered risky.

While there has been some evolving estimates about asymptomatic spread, it is known that pre-symptomatic people can begin shedding the virus into the environment up to 5 days before symptoms appear. Viral loads build until symptoms appear, meaning that an infected person releases the most virus into the environment just prior to symptoms showing. The data shows that just 20% of infected people are responsible for 99% of the viral load.

Any environment that is enclosed with a high density of people is risky. Super spread environments and events include; nursing homes, ships, meat packing plants, weddings, funerals, birthday parties, and business events. It is important to remember the exposure time is a factor, which is why workplaces, restaurants, choirs, and indoor sporting events can also be problematic. If you are exposed to a low viral load from people speaking, singing, laughing etc., etc. but it is for several hours, the chance of being exposed to a viral load that causes infection increases. For example, when you run into the grocery store for 10 minutes, your exposure risk is less than the grocery store worker who is in the store for 8 hours a day. Social distancing rules can only protect you with brief exposure or outdoor exposure.

Danielson Pharmacy

Danielson Pharmacy is the only independent pharmacy left in Northeastern CT. The pharmacy has been offering free delivery service as an option even before the COVID-19 pandemic. The staff is efficient, personable, and helpful through the process of transferring prescriptions. I requested the total due when the prescription was ready to have a check ready when the delivery person arrived. Arriving on time, the transaction was easy and safe. For those who value supporting independent businesses, I soundly recommend Danielson Pharmacy.

DAY KIMBALL HEALTHCARE CENTER LABORATORY BLOOD DRAW

Because I have a medical condition that requires periodic, routine blood tests, I could not delay venturing out for the test any longer. I was extremely impressed with the exceptional attention given to safety throughout the process. There were no other patients in the waiting area. The receptionist was logging in visitors vs. the previous procedure of having patients sign in. Protective barriers have been installed between the reception area and waiting area. When it was time to sign for the procedure, the receptionist sanitized the pen and digital pad in front of me. From my walk, beginning in the waiting area to the blood draw station, to the exit, I counted 4 hand sanitizing stations, and everyone wore masks. Now I know it is a health care facility and all of these practices should indeed be implemented, but I, for one, was relieved to see everyone pleasantly and professionally doing the right thing!

Daigle Farm

Great local farm! I love that over the weekend, Dillon sends out a message of all the products available at his farm each week, I then place the order and by Thursday, he delivers local, fresh, and sustainably grown food! Dillon respectfully wears a mask when he is within six feet of his customers. He is so friendly and personable that we truly look forward to seeing him each week! Nothing beats farm fresh eggs! The greens are fresh, delicious and the perfect mix for easy, delicious salads, far exceeding the quality of any of the greens available in the supermarket. I can honestly say I have never had better chicken or turkey. I am blessed to have discovered Daigle Farm LLC on a friend’s Facebook feed.

Imperfect Foods

*** 3 out of 5

Food box subscriptions are the perfect grocery solution for those practicing COVIID-19 social distancing. Saving money is possible, although food subscriptions range from reasonable to very pricey. Imperfect Foods was my choice because food waste, frankly breaks my heart. I don't mind fruits and vegetables that are misshapen, have spots, or a short shelf life. I enjoy cooking and having fresh produce delivered to my doorstep at a discount, because these items are passed over by grocers.  It is a good deal for me. I can freeze items I am not going to use promptly, add an extra side of vegetables to any dinner, and even get to try new produce at a bargain. There are several options available to fit any family size or budget. From a small box biweekly box to a large box weekly. Subscribers are allowed to reject items ( it was artichokes for me, I love them canned or jarred, but have never been able to master cooking an edible fresh artichoke) and add items. I'm often surprised by the variety of items available! Now for the drawbacks... the packaging is bargain basement, and while insulated, there are no ice packs included. I've had raspberries smooshed to a pulp and a boxful of blueberries that had spilled from their clamshell pack. I am considering pausing the subscription for the summer, because I am concerned about how fragile items will hold up in summer's heat. Stop and Shop has restarted their PeaPod pick up, and if the COVID-19 numbers continue to decline in Northeastern CT, I will venture out to the local Farmer's Markets again. Often, the Farmers, will also offer discounts on imperfect produce to regular customers!

DeFazio Orchard and Greenhouses

***** 5 out of 5

I contacted the orchard via Facebook Messaging two weeks ago asking if they would process a phone order. It was a great experience. Within minutes, DeFazio Orchard messaged a full listing of flowers and plants available. I replied to the message with the items I wanted to purchase. I was given a total. I then called with my credit card information and scheduled a time for pickup. When I arrived, Katie (wearing a mask) put the plants in my car. She chose a beautiful selection of annuals and I have been busy planting ever since! Can’t wait until we have fresh, sun-ripened tomatoes!

Sweet Peas Fine Foods & Farm Market

***** 5 out of 5

I would like to convey my highest praise for how this establishment is serving their customers during this COVID-19 pandemic! They have implemented an extremely efficient curbside pickup service. We call in the order, provide payment information, call when we are at the parking lot, and the food is delivered to the car. Perfect! Also, if you like seafood, their Lobster Rolls are out of this world!

Harvest Moon Health Foods

***** 5 out of 5

Harvest Moon is doing a GREAT job adapting their store to safely serve their customers during this pandemic. The staff is wearing masks, there is a plexiglass shield at the check out counter, and the card reader is sanitized after each transaction. The selection of food, supplements, personal care, and cleaning items are well stocked. Special orders are always welcome. The owners are wonderful!

Bousquets.jpg

Steve Bousquet's Appliance & TV

**** 4 out of 5

Maytag 3.5 cu ft Commercial Grade Residential washing machine MVWP575GW, yes folks, because plague, political unrest, and pestilence isn't enough this year, we were forced to buy a new washer!  Bousquet's made the purchase a quick and easy one.  Perusing Bousquet's inventory on their website is easy, and with only a few phone calls, we were able to choose the washing machine desired, make delivery and payment arrangements. The price was fair, considering delivery, set-up and removal of the old appliance are included in the price.  Both delivery technicians followed instructions about where to enter the house, were masked the entire installation, courteous and efficient.  I am happy to support local, independent business vs. the big box stores.   Killingly is fortunate to have a full service appliance dealer in our area that can meet Lowe's or online pricing while exceeding their service.  I would give them 5 stars, but for two issues.  In an attempt to have the previous washer repaired, ( it was only 6 years old, ) we called for their repair service.  We were warned that given these pandemic times, their repair staff was stretched thin; a reasonable situation.  As long time Bousquet's customers, we've had our fair share of repair technician visits.  This latest one was disappointing.  We are practicing COVID-19 protocols strictly in our household, so we called

ahead to review specific instructions.  Although the representative I spoke with on the phone was extremely helpful and assuring, the repair technician disregarded all of my requests, and only wore his mask fully when speaking to me face to face.  He was dismissive and not very helpful in answering my questions.  Both when the repair visit was scheduled and delivery was scheduled, we had requested an advance call when the technicians were 15 from arrival to be properly prepared with our masks and work from home tasks, but the call was not placed either visit.  While annoying, I still would highly recommend Steve Bousquet's Appliance & TV for any appliance purchases needed in these times.

Walmart

*** 3 out of 5

While there may be those who are neutral in their opinion of Walmart, most either love Walmart or hate Walmart.  I am in the latter group.  There are times, when, for convenience sake, our family has endured all the unpleasantness often experienced in Walmart, to just pick up an item quick and cheap.  Superstores aren't my thing, and I avoid them as much as possible.   We needed a tarp quickly, and we were in the Sweet Pea's plaza, so my husband decided to bite the bullet.  In some areas Walmart is trying to implement healthy COVID-19 procedures, for example, the number of patrons allowed in the store at a time is limited.  The designated area for patrons awaiting their turn to enter is marked at 6 foot intervals.  Once inside, there are no COVID-19 protections.  Customers beware; my advice is to either use self-checkout, sanitizing yourself before use, or order ahead to use their pickup service.
