I KNOW THIS MUCH IS TRUE

Did you know HBO has a new series based on a novel written by Norwich, CT Author, Wally Lamb?
"I Know This Much Is True"

It is an 8 episode series, based on the novel of the same name.  Located in the fictional town of "Three Rivers" (CT natives will recognize the reference) the series captures the look of an Eastern CT town, but most of the filming occurred in NY locations.  The series is well-acted, heartbreaking, sometimes endearing, and tear jerking as it winds through all the shortcomings of mental health care, and health care in this country in general.  If you are a Wally Lamb or Mark Ruffalo fan, you will enjoy the series.  If you have CT roots, I recommend watching just to see how Hollywood views eastern CT.  More times than not, they were spot on!

THE SOPRANOS

Winning a multitude of awards, the last episode aired of this American crime drama aired in 2014.  The Sopranos is widely regarded as one of the greatest television series of all times and its original run lasted six years on the HBO network. Six years of popularity is quite an achievement for a show about waste management.

At first glance, this is a mobster show.  The genre has always made me uncomfortable.  The seductive ease of which conflicted people are drawn into a life of crime is frankly terrifying because it is completely understandable.  It's easy to judge fictional characters or real life mobsters, but always there is a "there by the Grace of God, go I" caveat to my judgement.   Regardless of my personal aversion to organized crime shows, I was drawn into this program due to the excellent writing and acting that brought these characters to life.

This film is both dated and timeless; beloved by many.  If you're in need of a pick-me-up movie, inspiration to just go for it, or justification to play hooky, then it's time to  rewatch this movie.  It's fun to look back at young Matthew Broderick, Charlie Sheen, and Jennifer Gray, too!

NUMISMATISTS:

This one's for any of the local Numismatists! The U.S. once had a twenty cent coin. It never really caught on, printing was discontinued in 1878.  People generally thought the quarter made more cents!
